Over the half term break I took the little ones down to Brighton for the day, I couldn’t resist showing them the opulent Brighton Pavilion (I think they were more impressed with the artisan ice cream we had just after!) Once a Royal Residence, the beautiful building that we can see today was designed by John Nash, who redesigned and extended the original building on the site into a stunning oriental palace. The Old Dairy in Crouch Hill, an unexpected find on a recent trip to London. Built in 1836, the beautifully ornate diary is now a Grade II Listed building. The beautiful Ciutadella de Menorca Cathedral which I managed to visit on a recent holiday (by bribing the kids with ice cream, you can spot them if you look closely). The Cathedral is set within the old lanes of the city, which are just a delight to wander around. Originally constructed in 1300, the main facade you see today was rebuilt in the current neoclassical style in 1813. ‘Another Place’ by Antony Gormley, Crosby Beach in Merseyside. The installation consists of 100 (I have been told, I didn’t count that many) cast-iron life size figures looking out to sea. Each statue now shows natural wear and tear from their time battling the elements, adding additional texture to the original. The installation is now a permanent fixture here, having been seen at Cuxhaven in Germany, Stavanger in Norway and De Panne in Belgium. A lovely find - @thesaltwatersauna in Sandbanks, near Poole. This is definitely worth a visit, especially for anyone who enjoys sea swimming. Located right on the beach the sauna has created a mini destination, enabling people to take a moment to stop and reconnect with nature. The wood-fired sauna is beautifully handcrafted by @heartwoodsaunas The design is stunningly simple, timber built with clean lines and a contemporary finish. Just before Christmas we stayed in this former Isolation Hospital, near Wareham. The fabulous building is now Grade II Listed, the property has been renovated as holiday accommodation that you can rent via @nationaltrust The buildings are a great example of an early 1900s pre-fabricated system, by Humphrey's of Knightsbridge. Timber framed on brick base, clad in corrugated iron and with pitched corrugated iron roof. Broadway Tower, looking very festive in the snow. We had a lovely weekend here over Christmas, the walk up to the tower was definitely one of the highlights of the visit. The gothic folly was designed by James Wyatt and built in 1799 for the Countess of Coventry. I spotted this beautiful piece of architecture, the Church of St. Jaume dappled in the evening sun, while on our summer holiday in Alcúdia, Majorca. Alcúdia is the oldest city on the island, and well worth a visit. You can happily spend hours walking through the narrow streets, plazas, along massive medieval walls and take in this neo-gothic church. I love this bridge, it always reminds me of heading off to Cardiff University - happy times 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 The Prince of Wales bridge was opened in 1996, to supplement the original 1960’s bridge between England & Wales. The bridge spans an impressive 5,128 meters with a simple looking cable-stayed design (which must have been very complex to make work!) Some photos from a few months ago when I had a lovely weekend in Manchester, it is such a vibrant city with such rich architecture. First up - the fabulously gothic John Rylands Library, if a bit eerie too. The building was founded by Mrs Rylands in memory of her late husband, designed by Basil Champneys and opened to the public in 1900. Next - the very grand Manchester Central Library, a rotunda domed structure inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Designed by E. Vincent Harris and opened in 1934. The outside is fab, to be honest the interior was a little underwhelming, very clinical and bland. Lunch stop - a great stop for a long lunch is @mackiemayor food hall. A Grade II listed market building, reimagined as a contemporary food hall. Brilliant news that St Margaret’s Church has been included in the shortlist for this years @ricsurveyors Social Impact Awards, in the Community Benefit category. As Hugh Pearman put it, ‘St Margaret’s was decaying and all but abandoned a few years ago, unlisted, its tiny remaining congregation dispersed… (it) appeared to have little to offer and inevitably faced the chop. ‘But the diocese gave it one last chance... today it is the same physical building, but an entirely different kind of place: a real mixed-use community asset for everyone, not just those who happen to be people of faith.’ Winners will be announced on Wednesday 18th May, good luck @dbrayarchi & the Studio BAD team.
